Mercedes Adenauer

German response to British Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and the Bentley was the flagship model of Mercedes-Benz W186 Model 300 a four-door luxury car was produced between 1951 and 1957. Favoured by statesmen and business leaders the W186 is often identified as an Adenauer after Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), during his 1949-1963 tenure, being manufactured exquisitely for the top brass of the country these vehicles stayed mostly in the colder regions of Europe and instead of having air conditioners etc emphasis was more towards keeping the car and its occupants warmer and cozy. A few of course made their way to other countries by the then rich and famous and one such car came for the duties of a rich and a famous hotelier of India. Adding air conditioner to an already non tropicalised engine was like adding fuel to fire to an already hot running engine, obviously making the car unsuitable for use for more than twenty- thirty kilometres at a stretch with an eventual boil out. This particular car came to me for maintenance in the late seventies and early eighties but was tucked away for its unreliable behaviour till the start of the millennium when another attempt was made to tropicalise the engine with modern technology plus restore the car to its original Glory. It was not easy to modernise the engine into the latest technologies but I endured it adding various refined modern technologies like an extra efficiency honey comb radiator, oil cooler instead of the oil heater, thermostatically controlled electric cooling system, electronic ignition system and the like. Post restoration the results were excellent and the vehicle became a star of the shows where ever it went for display and exhibition pan India.
